Why Taking Supplements Is Essential In Your Food and Fitness Regime

Have you done a home workout recently? How about eating one too many snacks? If you’ve done at least one of these options, then you know that things have definitely changed due to COVID-19. So too, have our thoughts on food and having a balanced diet. Eating a healthy diet is more important now than ever before. Fact: food alone isn’t enough for your body to get the Recommended Daily Amounts of certain Vitamins and Minerals it needs. One way to rectify this is to take some dietary supplements. In this blog post, we’ll see an argument into why supplementation is good to use.

The Case for Supplements: Why They Are Useful

Currently, the way fruits and vegetables are grown etc can lead to acidic soil. So because of this, your diet generally contain too much of one component, e.g. Unsaturated fats from certain processed food, or too little of another component, e.g. Vitamin D. Also, it can be a wee bit difficult to eat all of the food that is currently deemed healthy.

Why Include Supplements in Your Food and Fitness Regime?

Let’s split the reasoning into two sections:

Diet

Dietary supplements can be very useful when you know that you are not consuming enough of a specific Vitamin, Mineral or some other nutrient as they are supplementary to your diet, NOT substitutes of your diet. So e.g. if you know that you aren’t consuming enough Fibre, you would supplement your increased intake of fibre-filled foods with a fibre-containing supplement. And finally, there are people worldwide who may suffer from vitamin deficiencies, the most common in the UK being Zinc, Iron and Vitamin D (of course there are more, which we’ll look at in subsequent blog posts)

Fitness

Whether you’re doing High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts, or running/jogging regularly, your body needs to build muscle over time aka, time to increase your Protein intake via your diet and a supplement i.e. a protein shake. Of course, it’s not just Protein that’s needed. Other nutrients are needed as well in order to supplement your goal of increasing your body’s optimisation during your fitness journey

Is There a Link Between Supplements and Your Feet Health?

The short answer is no, there isn’t. However, there is a link generally between nutrition and diet impacting your feet’s health. In a previous post discussing why having good nutrition is essential for good foot health (see it here), I mentioned:

Similar to what happens when poor nutrition causing the malfunction of other organs/systems contained in the body, the feet can be negatively affected by poor nutrition as well.

Generally, having substantial amounts of Vitamins and Minerals in the body overall can negatively affect the feet, especially in conditions such as Diabetes.

So now we now a snippet of the reasons why you may want to also include taking some dietary supplements as part for your nutrition and fitness journey. And the beauty of supplements is that they are very easy to use and unlike items like milk (lol), their best before date can last for quite a while.
