The Basics of Good Foot Care

It’s slowly getting hotter and hotter. I personally love hot weather! You might already be slathering yourself with lots of sunscreen. It’s good to take care of your arms, legs and your general health but what about your feet? With the heat comes things that can really cause a mess on the feet if they are not taken care of, like excessive moisture. Scroll down to find out five tips for good foot care that works all year round, regardless of the weather.

5 Best Ways to Give Your 👣 Some TLC

1 Wash your feet DAILY

Say no to germ and dirt build up

Some of you may be giving your screen a certain look right now. I know, but just like on the arms, face or anywhere else in the body, not washing your feet regularly accumulates dirt and potentially harmful microorganisms as well. Conditions like Athlete’s Foot (Tinea Pedis) can happen to anyone, healthy or unhealthy.

2 Dry your feet THOROUGHLY

Dry your feet very well to prevent excessive moisture

Having water permanently on the feet can lead to some problems such as Maceration, aka a fungal infection. Excessive moisture creates Fissures (cracks) on the skin. This can become a breeding ground for the fungi and left on its own, it can create some serious headache aka infection.

3 Sunbathing your feet for too long is a NO NO

Just like for the rest of the body, sunbathing the feet has disadvantages

Sunbathing for VERY short time periods is okay. Why, you ask? Similar to what happens if you overdo it with the rest of your body, although rare, it isn’t impossible to develop a Melanoma (cancerous cell) on the foot/toes.

4 Watch where you STEP

Protect your feet by watching where you step outside

There’s nothing wrong walking around certain surfaces in your barefeet for super short periods of time, but, it’s not impossible for a simple scratch from a stone or pebble on the sole of your foot to become a problem e.g. a bruise or even a wound. So yes, please wear shoes, especially the right ones.

5 Moisturising your feet is a MUST

Moisturising your feet helps prevent dry skin

Our skin contains structures known as Sebaceous glands, which release Sebum, our natural skin lubricant. As we age, the sebum these glands secrete decreases in volume- this is one of the reasons why our skin generally feels slightly stiffer as we age. It’s still very important to moisturise the feet regardless of sebum level. This helps prevent dryness and protects your skin from Callus or Corns developing. Try this Moisurising Lotion to get started.

Conclusion

So kick back, relax and enjoy the sunshine but remember, your 👣 are just as important as your daily beauty/skincare regime.
